Sporting Clube de Goa keep momentum with back-to-back wins

Sporting Clube de Goa maintained their perfect start to their Goa Pro League campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Cortalim Villagers SWSC at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday.
Joel Colaco and Joyson Gauncar score for the Flaming Oranje.
The Flaming Oranje, led by coach Armando Colaco, took early command with a display of strategic prowess and athletic execution.

From the outset, Sporting Clube demonstrated their intent to control the game. Joel Colaco’s remarkable acrobatic half-volley in the 8th minute set the tone for the match. The play began with Ivon Costa linking up with Dattaraj Gaonkar, whose ingenious backheel set Costa up to deliver a perfect cross for Colaco. His first-time finish left the Cortalim defense and goalkeeper grasping at air, signaling an early lead for the Flaming Oranje.

Cortalim Villagers, who were looking to bounce back from a draw against Guardian Angel SC, made significant tactical shifts with coach Jude opting for Velroy Carvalho at right-back and Jaison Vaz in an attacking role. Despite these changes, their efforts to balance the game faced a setback when Ronil Azavedo’s curling shot struck the crossbar in the 28th minute—a close call that highlighted the match’s competitive edge.

The second half saw Sporting continuing their aggressive play. Joyson Gauncar, a substitute who has been consistently impactful, once again proved his worth. After missing an early opportunity in the second half, Gauncar found the net in the 68th minute. Receiving a well-timed pass from Selwyn Miranda, he skillfully cut inside and curled a right-footed shot beyond the reach of Cortalim’s goalkeeper, doubling Sporting’s lead and essentially securing the match.

While Cortalim attempted a late-game rally, their efforts fell short. A missed connection by Navneeth late in the game exemplified their struggles throughout the match as they failed to capitalize on their few opportunities.

Sporting Clube de Goa’s ability to maintain pressure and exploit tactical opportunities was evident as they not only controlled the midfield but also executed flawlessly in attack. The win adds another chapter to their strong start to the season, following a narrow victory over Churchill Brothers, and positions them as formidable defenders of their title in the Goa Professional League. The team’s performance left fans and critics alike impressed with their seamless teamwork and strategic depth, setting high expectations for their upcoming fixtures.
